E36 `90 - `00
The E36 series is the third generation of the 3 Series from the automaker BMW. It was introduced in August 1990 as the successor to the E30 series and was produced as a sedan until February 1998. The BMW Compact and Z3 models were also built using the E36 platform.
CAE BMW E36 Short Shifter – Precision, Control & Motorsport Emotion
The CAE Short Shifter BMW E36 turns every gear change into a direct, mechanical experience. Developed for drivers who want more control, more feedback and more motorsport feeling. Whether on the road, at a trackday or in racing use: this short shifter delivers gear changes that feel like performance.
While conventional shift linkages often feel vague and tend towards long throws, our short shifter completely redefines gear changes: short, precise, crisp and absolutely reliable – even under high lateral forces or full-throttle pressure.

Compatible with many BMW models
-
- BMW E36
- as well as BMW 02, E21, E30, E46 and others with 5- & 6-speed Getrag or ZF gearboxes
- Standard H-pattern & dog-leg H-pattern
What does a short shifter really do in a BMW E36?
-
- A short shifter shortens the shift throw and improves the feedback when shifting between gears.
- You shift faster, more precisely and with real feedback.
Details:
The reduced movement of the shift lever lowers the reaction time while increasing the accuracy of gear selection. The vehicle feels more agile, more direct and sportier. Especially during fast load changes, rev-matching or when accelerating out of corners, the difference with a CAE Short Shifter is clearly noticeable.
Example:
On the E36, our short shifter reduces the shift throw to approx. 75 mm – a difference you feel with every gear change.
Does a short shifter require registration?
In Germany, yes – but with CAE Shifting, that’s no problem.
A valid TÜV parts certificate (Teilegutachten) is available for this CAE Short Shifter.
This makes registration in accordance with § 19/3 StVZO straightforward.
Note:
Please indicate at the time of purchase if a certificate is required.
Attention! Please note:
Outside of Germany, Croatia, Luxembourg, Austria, Spain and Switzerland, our shifters are delivered without certificate by default!

Recommendation: CAE shift rod 10023ROD-AL

For maximum precision → CAE shift rod 10023ROD-AL (available separately)
Our “rods” (DSSR / adjustable shift rod) offer the advantage of complete freedom from play and easy adjustability.
Freedom from play
Our rods contribute to perfect shiftability – the best shifter is useless if the linkage to the gearbox has play. This is where tolerances in the 1/100 mm range make the difference. Through extremely elaborate manufacturing, we have managed to make our rods 100 % free of play.
The hard-anodised surface ensures unmatched service life.
Thanks to full adjustability in length and angle, the shifter can be positioned perfectly for the driver.

Street or Race shifter – what is the difference?

Race
The CAE Race Short Shifters are uncompromisingly designed for track tools and race cars without interior trim.
Installing a centre console is only possible to a limited extent – if at all, it must definitely be modified/cut out.
The shift throws are designed to be as short as possible, and the gear knob is positioned as high as possible. Our Race shifters are also delivered with a parts certificate.
Street
More and more customers want to use our CAE Short Shifters in their “daily driver”.
That is why we have designed some short shifters so that they can be installed almost invisibly.
The centre console requires no or only minimal modification, and the shift throws are somewhat longer than on the Race versions. Of course, with a parts certificate.
